Province of British Columbia Resolved to be First with New Direct-Lend Student Loans Program

When the Federal Government's student loan risk-sharing agreement with the major chartered banks ended in 2000, the Province of British Columbia's student financial assistance office was ready. After all, StudentAid BC knew that over 80,000 students from the Province were relying on them to provide the financial assistance that would allow them to attend private post-secondary schools, colleges, and universities throughout Canada and abroad. StudentAid BC had done their homework, and were ready for the outcome of the federal government's negotiations with the banks. Within a matter of weeks, StudentAid BC had presented several options to the BC government's Treasury Board, and the decision was made to pursue an arrangement with an outsourced service provider.
